Some Advice On How To Build Your Great Garden Shed

By Rizenka Crawford

A garden shed is extremely useful for various reasons but mainly due to storage. There are a couple of different things you really should consider before you go ahead and build one so here are some tips on how to build your great garden shed.

There are two types for you to look at and the most common is referred to as the apex roof type where it comes to a point in the middle of the roof with two sloping sides. The other is called the pent roof where it slopes down from a single high point to the other end of the shed which is now a lot lower.

The one you get does depend on preference which is the same as the size of the shed you need. You are able to get them in a few different sizes but it does depend on your space and the money you have as the larger the shed the bigger the price tag.

So when building it clearly you need wood or even buy ready made panels for the sides. There should be space for a window on one side to allow in the light however Perspex can be good enough for that and it does not have to be glass as long as it is clear so it is not too dark inside. You also need material to waterproof the roof and this is very important. When you are building it yourself you of course should have wood or indeed get panels which are already constructed. You need to have a window on one side as this is going to let some light in but you do not have to use glass as something such as clear Perspex is good enough. Lastly you should also consider having the correct material to cover the roof in order to make it water tight.

For the wood you are best to use a tongue and groove style of plank as they are tighter and it is harder for the water to get into it and then warp the wood. You do also need to get the correct wood preservative to coat the planks with so they become more waterproof and you have to redo this at least every two years.

The base is probably going to be made of wood although it is very good if you have slabs or concrete. If it is wood then make sure it is lifted off the soil because if you place it right on the ground it is going to rot in no time at all.

With the roof you must get the correct type of felt but when putting it on use a special glue instead of nails. This is because nails go through the felt and the roof which means rain can run down them and over time it is going to start to work away at the roof leading to problems.
